Death

Description

The second panel of my Life and Death diptych.  So for Death, I tried to draw a lot of parallels to Life; for instance the trees form the same shape, but they don’t have any leaves.  Also the butterflies in Life were replaced with a dead beetle, and some of the flowers were replaced by mushrooms.  Even though both death and life are looking over their shoulders, death appears to be hiding or shying away, whereas life seems more open and welcoming.  I also paid attention to what flowers I would put in the picture - I included black roses (symbols of death) and red poppies (symbols of remembrance for soldiers who died in wartime).  I was originally going to include a raven somewhere in there, but decided against it in the end.  Instead, death’s hair color is like that of a raven’s feathers.  It’s a little difficult to tell in this picture, but it looks more shiny in person.

This piece was done with soft pastels on Strathmore 18x24 toned paper and took about 40 hours to complete.  Hope you all like it!  I'll upload the full view of both pieces together next week.  :D

What a beautiful piece of art!

I think that you've done an excellent job of conveying your theme. The muted colour tones and the thin, pale stature of the woman really invokes a sense of absence and wistfulness that go hand in hand with death.

I absolutely love that you've done this work with soft pastels. I think it's a credit to your skill that you were able to create a piece that's both powerful and delicate, with such a difficult medium.

There are so many intricate details that give this piece depth, I just love looking at this. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>

Fantastic work!
